Applications of Fog Cannon Dust Suppression Systems

The "science" of fog cannon dust suppression

The core theory of fog cannon dust suppression is the slipstream effect. In order to combine fugitive dust in the air and bring it to the ground, dust suppressant droplets and dust particles must be comparable. The dust particles are more likely to collide with the droplets and be absorbed, bringing the dust to the ground. Smaller droplets of dust suppressant and enough water are the secret to achieving incredible coverage.

Smaller droplets have the potential to travel farther because of the higher ratio of surface area to mass, which means that the effect of air pressure is relatively greater compared to gravity. As a result, the air keeps them buoyant longer before gravity acts to bring them down. The science says that heavier droplets are more susceptible to the effects of gravity, just like clouds, and when they grow too large they fall like rain. Smaller droplets may evaporate more easily, which is why you need the right nozzle for your situation.

In some cases, depending on your situation, this may be the desired effect. Fine water droplets form a dense mist and trap dust particles increasing their weight and causing them to fall from the air. The fog cloud also needs to be greater than the concentration of dust particles in the air in order for all the dust to be captured.

What are the applications of fog cannon dust suppression systems?

Fog cannon dust suppression systems are designed to solve the problem of airborne dust particles generated by mining activities, demolition sites and bulk material handling sites. Fog cannon units are available in different sizes. Smaller units are ideal for dust suppression because the dust is generated at easily defined point sources such as discharge to stockpiles, discharge to vessels, recovery from stockpiles, dumping, crushing and loading/unloading trucks.

Fog guns are aimed at the point source of dust and quickly suppress the discharge before it dissipates. Larger units can suppress general airborne dust by fogging general areas. They are also capable of suppressing dust caused by high volume dust events such as blasting, for which low throw distances are often necessary. Fog cannons are also suitable for dust suppression of piles, where their low water consumption is an advantage. Fog cannons have throwing ranges ranging from 30 to 500 meters and they utilize powerful fans.

The automatic rotation can reach 360 degrees and the elevation angle is adjustable from 0 to 45 degrees. Water consumption ranges from 15 to 6,000 liters/minute, depending on the model and application. Chemical dust suppressants, such as surfactants and liquid polymers, can also be added to the spray to make the water work or to form a crust on the buildup. Other fog system accessories include telescopic lift systems, remote control including remote cameras, intrinsically safe for explosive environments and self-contained vehicle units.

Dust Management

Dust that is not managed effectively can reduce productivity, have a serious impact on operating costs, damage the environment, and cause harm to the safety of workers and surrounding communities. The water mist produced by fog cannons effectively suppresses dust particles in the air. Dust kills people, and tying it down at the source helps save lives. We advocate for dust suppression to minimize the risk to miners, workers and communities near dust-generating activities.
